About Songs of Syx
Songs of Syx is a retro-styled city builder set in a low-fantasy world, drawing on classics such as Pharaoh, Dungeon Keeper and Rome: Total War. What sets it apart is scale: it simulates very large populations while still tracking each citizen individually, on big maps with buildings at one-to-one scale. You start with a small village and grow it into a capital supported by towns, farms, lumber camps, castles and ports, managing several races with their own cultures and needs, and deal with neighbouring kingdoms through alliances or war, including real-time battles with up to 50,000 individual units. Routine work is largely automated so you can focus on planning and rule. The game has been in Early Access on Steam since September 2020 and receives large numbered updates, the latest being V71 in June 2026. A free version is available on itch.io and as a Steam demo, trailing the paid build by a few months, which makes it easy to try. It suits strategy players who enjoy dense simulation and very long-term projects.
Why it is here: A long-running, largely one-person simulation project that shows what patient Early Access development with an engaged community can build.
